What Families Are Saying
We were able to bring 3 generations together, with representation from both my side, and my husband's side of the family. At the time of the photo session, our son was 9 months old, so the opportunity to capture some of his early moments with his grandparents was very special. Additionally, our parents (and an aunt) were encouraged to share stories of the Black experience in the US and the Caribbean, where our family has roots.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
As a child, I treasured Sunday afternoons in my father's kitchen, where he'd prepare spicy dishes from Sierra Leone while sharing stories of his childhood in Freetown. When the stories deepened, he'd bring out old photo albums filled with tattered black and white portraits. I was amazed to see pieces of myself in these faces—my eyes, my nose, my smile. Through handwritten names and dates, these strangers became my people.
These family stories and photos create bridges between past and present, laying foundations for the future. I created The Black Family Photo Album to help Black families intentionally preserve these connections across generations.
I want to capture your mother with her grandbabies, record your grandfather sharing life stories on film, and preserve the voices, laughter, and memories that define your family. My hope is that these photos and films will not only bring your family together today but build bridges to future generations, ensuring they know the full richness of their heritage.
